Engineered Garments × Brooks Brothers
Brooks Brothers, America’s oldest clothing brand, has joined forces with Engineered Garments for a new collaboration, reinterpreting formalwear through Nepenthes founder Daiki Suzuki’s signature design philosophy.
Brooks Brothers’ 200-year legacy of innovating timeless American style was a perfect match for the Engineered Garments approach to function, purpose and asymmetry. For Daiki, the collaboration was both personal and professional: “It’s a brand I’ve known and loved since my youth; one whose history, iconic creations, style and philosophy all resonate deeply with me,” he says.
The project began with a conversation between Daiki, Brooks Brothers CEO Ken Ohashi and Creative Director Michael Bastian, who suggested exploring a new direction outside of Engineered Garments typical casualwear.
“That comment served as the trigger for this project,” Daiki explains. “The goal was to create a new interpretation of formalwear that could balance the seemingly opposing extremes of formality and casual ease.”
Daiki’s lifelong admiration for Brooks Brothers’ countless innovations – from the No. 1 Sack Suit and Oxford shirt to cordovan loafers – shaped the collaboration from start to finish, with a driving desire to evolve some of the staple styles he’s so familiar with.
Drawing inspiration from his past work in occasion clothing, Daiki reimagined Brooks Brothers classics with unexpected details and his unique perspective for their Black Fleece label. The collection features a denim tuxedo jacket with satin peaked lapels paired with relaxed, wide-legged trousers in a utilitarian cut, as well as denim and Oxford cloth cravat shirts – a reference to the Brooks Brothers ‘Clarney’ shirt from the 1960s.
“Brooks Brothers has always honoured its heritage whilst finding ways to evolve the American style,” says Ohashi. “Remarkably, over the last two centuries, innovation has been as much a part of the brand as tradition, and this is even true of our formal clothing.”
“Partnering with Daiki and Engineered Garments allowed us to explore formalwear codes in an entirely new light – mixing tradition and creativity in a way that feels authentic and fresh.”
The limited edition Engineered Garments × Brooks Brothers collection will be available on October 22nd at Nepenthes London.
