Engineered Garments x Reebok BB4000 II
For more than two decades, Daiki Suzuki’s Engineered Garments has explored beyond the boundaries of workwear formalism, through clothing design. For their next collaborative project, the brand leaned further into Reebok’s home court: retro sport style.
“The idea of searching for silver and gold accents in the style of the 1980s led me to explore old-school basketball shoes,” commented Engineered Garments Founder, Daiki Suzuki. “Among them, I found that the style of Reebok's BB4000 II is the closest match to my envisioned image.”
Presented in all-over metallic gold and all-over metallic silver colorways, Engineered Garments’ BB4000 II boasts a premium leather upper, an embossed quarter panel logo, and a chalk midsole, seated atop a classic gum rubber outsole, all the while maintaining the model’s heritage sporting ethos.
“We considered sneakers that deviate from the typical university styles seen from other popular brands,” explained Suzuki. “Instead, we opted for a style reminiscent of the fashion sneakers that emerged alongside the hip-hop movement in the 1980s - styles that stood out for their distinctiveness, like reptile-patterned embossing, patent leather, or in this case, striking silver and gold uppers that deliver a unique hip-hop edge.”
“Reebok was carried at the import fashion store where I worked in Tokyo during my twenties and the brand continues to hold significant sentimental value for me personally, and in my fashion career.” shared Suzuki. “So, being granted the opportunity for collaborations like this is both an honor and deeply nostalgic. Through a few collaborations, my interest has only grown, making for incredibly stimulating projects fueled by new ideas.”
The Engineered Garments x Reebok SS24 BB4000 II will be available at Nepenthes London on Wednesday 1st May.
