Introduced by Engineered Garments designer Daiki Suzuki in 2000 during the second season of the brand, the Work Shirt has become a mainstay of the collection and exemplifies Daiki's attention to detail.
Taking details from the iconic Big Yank work shirts made in the first half of the 20th century, the standout design element is the asymmetric chest pockets. On the left, a 'mountain pocket' designed originally for easy access to a pack of cigarettes that wouldn't be damaged by sweat, and on the right, a larger pocket stitched with a penholder.
The cuff design was created to allow tightening around the wrists without costly pleating, and reinforcement stitching is added to the elbows and collar to increase the lifespan of the garment. Three types of stitching are used throughout the piece: flat fell single stitching in the hem, placket and pockets; triple stitching for the side seams, armholes and back yoke, and double-needle stitching for the collar and cuffs.
