Northampton-based shoemaker Joseph Cheaney & Sons, established in 1886, have built a special model with Engineered Garments based on their iconic and robust Cairngorm IIR derby.
The shoe uses the 4436 last, originally used for British military footwear, and features Cheaney's Veldtschoen (Dutch for 'field shoe') construction, where the upper is stitched over the sole to minimise gaps and block out water. Combined with the bellows tongue, crafted in one piece with the quarters, the design is a practical outdoor shoe with good protection from the elements.
Of course, this wouldn't be an Engineered Garments venture without a playful twist; the asymmetry that the New York maker is known for features in the combination of D-ring hardware and regular eyelets. The left and right shoes feature the same setup with no mirroring. Instead of the traditional commando sole, it's finished with a lightweight Vibram® Morflex sole.
