The Cowichan sweater has its roots in the Coast Salish communities of Vancouver Island, particularly the Cowichan (Quw’utsun’) people. Combining long-established Indigenous wool-working traditions with European knitting techniques introduced in the late 19th century, the distinctive sweaters became known for their warmth, durability and bold geometric and natural motifs.
