Nepenthes London × Needles Fall/Winter 2024
We are pleased to proclaim the upcoming release of two highly admired collaborative styles. The Rebuild by Needles Covered Pant and the Needles Mohair Cardigan have been interpreted and carefully curated by us here in London, and produced in Japan as part of a Nepenthes Special capsule.
Rebuild by Needles started as a line of reconstructed vintage clothing, making use of the selection sense, unique design philosophy, and sewing techniques cultivated over a career of over 30 years. Focusing on mass-produced items that are commonplace, though have an appeal as vintage clothing, the brand goes beyond the scope of remakes to reconstruct one new, unique piece from multiple items. "Rebuilding is not just remaking; it's combining several items to create a new, one-of-a-kind piece,” says Needles designer Keizo Shimizu. It all started with a vivid memory of mountains of unsold used clothing.
When Keizo visited the work boot manufacturer White’s in Spokane, Washington, he was impressed by how the craftsmen carefully repaired each and every pair of boots that had been worn by workers. The craftsmen said “This is rebuild.” It made sense to Keizo, who explains: “while remaking and recycling are common, there is a reason why they chose to use the word 'rebuild'." He felt a special attachment to the word, more than just recycling or remaking.
The Covered Pant takes form through dismantling used denim and reassembling them again. The pant is featured with a seasonal use of Glen plaid wool, found also on the Needles Loafer jacket and HDP Pant for Fall / Winter 2024.
The Needles Mohair Cardigan is fore mostly inspired by the iconic John Lurie, who famously donned a similar cardigan in Jim Jarmusch’s cult classic Stranger Than Paradise. The Needles Mohair Cardigan captures the essence of this timeless style. Made up from mohair yarn, the cardigan boasts a relaxed fit and unique texture, making it an ideal layering piece for the colder months. Its shaggy style and V-neck setup gives it a nostalgic feeling. The diamond jacquard design references the Needles Fall /Winter 2024 Cabana Shirt and matching HDP Short.
Shot by photographer Chris Rhodes and featuring creative director Mikey Krzyzanowski, the campaign took place at Rowans bowling alley located in Finsbury Park, London. Inspired by the character Jesus Quintana from The Big Lebowski, the backdrop of one of London’s most famous bowling locations perfectly captures the essence behind the release of these two products at Nepenthes London.
The Rebuild by Needles Covered Pant and Needles Mohair Cardigan reflect our stance on sustainability and creativity, appealing to a diverse audience. We are thrilled to bring these pieces to our customers, merging our sense of being and cultural significance. Both items will be available exclusively at Nepenthes London from Tuesday 12th November.
